  Does anyone live in the Harrisburg-Hershey area? I grew up there and am going back for a visit this week. I was diagnosed with Celiac affter I moved away, so I don't know the best spots to go for gluten-free friendly eats. Any suggestions?

  Can anyone recommend any good frozen dinners. My daughter is going to school in Rochester,NY and the school just isn't feeding her enough variety. Is is getting tired of rice crackers and cream cheese.

    Amy's makes a really good gf mac & cheese that you can find in the frozen foods. There are also some yummy gf soups in the frozen section--you may need to look at a health food store for these, however. If she has access to a toaster oven, Foods by George makes excellent gf pizza. My girls like it both hot and cold.

  Hi all,
  
  I know that when drinking some wine, I get horrible reactions, and then others, I have no problem (like Moet). I get the feeling that this means there are additives and colorings that are included in some wines (that they're not required to label) and as a result, they contain gluten.
  
  Does anyone else have similar thinking or have similar experiences?

    I am a celiac and I have worked at a wine shop for the last two years. I would say in general I am fine with wine, but every once in a while I question it. I am generally drinking quality wines from stand-up producers. I would be wary however of "grocery store" wines. Some of these companies add things like wood chips to wines to make them taste better. There is a new book called "The Battle for Wine and Love: or how I saved the world from Parkerization." by Alice Feiring. Haven't read it but my Dad said it was pretty interesting and scary. Talks about all the bad things wineries do to wines to make them taste better, richer, etc. This might be a good source of info. Otherwise, stick to high quality wines. Be really careful with sparkling beverages. I've seen some that say they are a... malted beverage. Hope this helps! Mari

    I have heard that people react more to some of the histamines in the wine (not the sulfites); however, I haven't researched this.

    I have done a bit of research on this issue and this is what I found out: The tops of wine barrels are ususlly sealed with a wheat paste during aging, also some wineries use this wheat paste to seal any leaks in the barrel during the aging process. So, it is logical that some of the wheat could leach into the wine, depending on how that particular barrel of wine is handeled. Blackstone Winery says they do NOT patch leaks in the wine barrels with wheat paste, they simply dump the wine into another barrel. So I drink mostly, Blackstone wine, or Sterling, or Rodney Strong and don't seem to react to these brands. I do reccomend calling or e-mailing the winery directly to determine thier process.

    Traditionally, wine is aged in oak casks and the board joints and the cork are sealed with wheat paste. A recent Clan Thompson Newsletter brought this up. But this is not true in all cases.

    Yes, I have noticed the same thing when it comes to drinking wine. The more expensive the wine the less reactions I get.
