  Traveling Nut Free (Whether You're Allergic Or Not)
  
  Just the other day, I was on Jet Blue and asked not to eat any foods with nuts in it.
  
  They even took around a trash bag (on the plane) so individuals could dispose of this food before the allergic individual could boarded the plane.
  
  Unfortunately, I happened to be carrying a bag of trail mix. I didn't throw it away, because it wasn't open, but I was a little miffed that I wasn't warned in advance (as I would have brought a snack that was nut free to enjoy).
  
  What could airlines do better to accommodate those with severe allergies while adequately warning those of us who don't have sensitivities?

    Maybe airlines like Jet Blue should make their practices (such as the one you experienced) clear when the reservations are made. If we were peanut butter eaters, I could see bringing peanut butter crackers on board for a satisfying snack; I would be frustrated to learn at the last minute that I couldn't eat my snack. Some warning when reservations are made would help so customers can anticipate that they might have to give up peanut containing snacks if an allergic flyer is onboard.

    The sad thing is it was so touching that they were making this accommodation for the passenger but just so unfortunate that they waited. If they only had announced it before we boarded the flight. alas.

    It is nice they care. I have to take Benadryl before every flight. Even if they make you throw away all your stuff, that doesn't protect anyone. Airplanes are totally contaminated with peanut crumbs and residue. It would help not to have the smell in the air though. I guess they should just make it part of your reservation information if they are going to ban peanuts.

    Many airlines are very accomodating to people with Peanut Allergies. When I fly with my son (on Southwest), I always call the airline ahead of time when I make my reservations and let them know. When I check in, they call the aircrew and inform them they'll need to remove all peanuts. Additionally, they give me a form to give to the Flight Attendant when I board. It's a great system!
    I can see your point that the airline should warn other passengers...but they aren't always informed ahead of time. Some airlines are peanut free. But, this does not stop people from bringing their own peanut containing products on board. Perhaps airlines could inform passengers as they check in that peanuts will not be permitted on board.

    I truly believe that when you book your ticket, you should tell the agent that you are PN/TN allergic. Then plane should be contacted that they will be PF/TF! You know how when you check your plane online and it shows the departure time and gate, it should also have an allergy free column as well.

  Does anyone know of any peanut-free, tree-nut free (from the source!) ice cream (made from milk) available in U.S. supermarkets or food stores? I have been looking for a year and a half and have concluded there isn't any in the U.S!

    Hm, you might have found this page before in your research, but this Ask About My Peanut Allergy mom says that Blue Bell is safe to eat. Unfortunately, we don't yet have blue bell products, but you could write the company and see for yourself. The only problem is I think Blue Bell has limited distribution!

    I eat Bryers with no problem. I am lactose intollerant, so I have only eaten the lactose free one though. You might email the company to make sure that it is safe, but I haven't even had a hint of reaction from the lactose free vanilla.

    Our favorite in our house is sunbutter. It is sunflower seed butter that tastes even better than peanut butter to me (my daughter and son have peanut allergy, so I can no longer have peanut butter). It can be used as a one-to-one substitute with peanut butter.
    
    I just read about this Canadian product last night called Golden Pea Butter (http://www.jsfoods.us/). It is sold in the us via the internet but is widely available throughout Canada. It is completely nut free (peanut and tree nut) and is made in a dedicated free of facility. I cannot wait to try it!

    Our new favorite peanut-free food (and by peanut-free I mean no peanut allergen ingredients and none in the manufacturing facility either!) is Bernie-o's by Annie's Naturals. What a helpful thing to have around when you have peanut allergic children! It's like super-safe spaghettios! Annie's is great about labeling.
