We determine the gluten free safety status of products using a very deliberate process, and carefully selected criteria. To learn more about our process, please see our Process Overview »
    • For a product to receive green checkmark status,
      the manufacturer must label the product as gluten free.
    • If the manufacturer states, in text printed on the product package that the food is gluten free, we set the product status as "labeled as gluten free."

      Please note that as of May 2009, the FDA has proposed voluntary labeling for foods labeled "gluten-free" but as of June 1st, 2009, the final rule has not been released.

      Foods that are gluten free are not required to carry a "gluten-free" label. However, under the proposed standard, if a manufacturer chooses to label a product "gluten-free" certain rules will apply.

      • Under the FDA’s proposed rule for gluten-free labeling, a labeled "gluten-free" product must not contain:
      • An ingredient that is wheat, barley, rye, or a crossbred variety of these grains, such as triticale;
      • An ingredient that is derived from one of these grains that has not been processed to remove gluten. Examples of these types of ingredients include wheat germ, hydrolyzed wheat protein, and malt;
      • An ingredient that is derived from one of these grains that has been processed to remove gluten (e.g., wheat starch, wheat-based modified food starch) but use of the ingredient results in the presence of 20 parts per million or more of gluten in the final food product;
      • 20 parts per million (ppm) or more gluten.
    • Please note: While we do not review all products for labeling compliance (this would be prohibitively expensive), from time to time clear cases of mislabeled products are brought to our attention. In these rare cases, if Zeer experts determine that a manufacturer has incorrectly labeled a product as gluten free, we may “hard code” the status of the product as "yellow caution" or "red stop." If you believe this is the case with a product, please notify us at feedback@zeer.com.

    • Note that some foods may contain gluten because of cross contamination. Please read our Note on Cross Contamination and Voluntary Allergen Advisory Statements for more information.
      • Our number one goal at Zeer is to help people get the product information they need to make their own decisions.

        In setting the gluten free status for a product (green checkmark, green question mark, yellow caution, and red stop), we make every effort to use the best evidence and science-based information possible.

        This means that we will have more products that "appear to be gluten free" or "may contain gluten" than we might otherwise. We're fine with that -- your safety is critically important, and we want to give you the best information you can in order to support your decisions.
